The Man who made flowers bloom

むかしむかし、あるところに、おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。
Once upon a time,
there lived an old man and his wife.
　
二人は子どもがいなかったので、シロというイヌをとても可愛がっていました。
Since they did not have any children
they lovingly cherished their dog called Shiro.　
　
ある日、シロが畑でほえました。
One day Shiro was digging in the fields.
「ここほれ ワンワン、ここほれ ワンワン」
" Dig here, woof woof,
dig here, woof woof " went Shiro.
「おや？　ここをほれと言っているのか。よしよし、ほってやろう」
You want me to dig here eh？.
Ok, I will start digging "
おじいさんがほってみると、
After digging a while what do you think he found ?
「ややっ、これはすごい！」
" Wow, this is amazing ! "
　
なんと、地面の中から大判小判がザクザクと出てきたのです。
　Out from the ground came a bag bursting
with gold coins ,some large and some small.
　
この話を聞いた、となりの欲張りじいさんが、
　But a greedy old man from the next house
had heard all of this.
　
「わしも、大判小判を手に入れる。おめえのシロを、わしに貸してくれや」
" I would also like to get my hands on some of
those gold coins. Lend me your dog for a while "
　
欲張りじいさんは、シロを無理矢理畑に連れて行きました。
　The greedy old man, then forcibly took Shiro
by the scruff of the neck and walked off.
　　
そして、嫌がるシロがキャンキャンないたところをほってみると、
　Whimpering, Shiro unwillingly dug
at the ground and revealed　
　
　くさいゴミがたくさん出てきました。
what seemed to be a lot of bad smelling rubbish.
　
「この役立たずのイヌめ！」
" Bah, what a useless dog you are ! "　
　
怒った欲張りじいさんは、なんと、シロを殴り殺してしまったのです。
　And with that, the greedy old man proceeded
to beat poor Shiro to death.
シロを殺されたおじいさんとおばあさんは、なくなくシロを畑にうめてやると、
棒(ぼう)を立ててお墓を作りました。
　When the old man and his wife found Shiro,
they cried and cried.
They then buried Shiro in the field and put a stick
in the ground as a grave for him.
　
次の日、おじいさんとおばあさんがシロのお墓参りに畑へ行ってみると、
　When the old man and his wife went to
the field the next day to pray at Shiro's grave,
　
シロのお墓の棒が一晩のうちに大木になっていたのです。
they were astonished to find that the stick
they had put in the ground had turned into
a giant tree overnight.
　
おじいさんとおばあさんは、その木で臼(うす)を作って、おもちをつきました。
　So the old man and his wife made a mortar
from the tree trunk and pounded rice for rice cakes.
　
　
すると不思議な事に、もちの中から宝物がたくさん出てきました。
　But then a strange thing happened.
From out of the rice cakes
came all sorts of treasures and such.
　
それを聞いた、欲張りじいさんは、
　The greedy old man had been listening nearby again.
　
「わしも、もちをついて宝を手に入れる。おめえの臼を、わしに貸してくれや」
" I also wish to pound some rice and receive
treasures like you.
Lend me your mortar now. "
　
と、臼を無理矢理借りると、自分の家でもちをついてみました。
　The greedy old man then snatched up the mortar
and took it home to make rice cakes with.
　
しかし出てくるのは石ころばかりで、宝物は出てきません。
　But no matter how hard he tried,
all he got from there mortar were rocks and stones.

「いまいましい臼め！」
" What a useless mortar you are ! "
　
怒った欲ばりじいさんは臼をオノでたたき割ると、焼いて灰にしてしまいました。
　The greedy old man then picked up
his axe and split the mortar in two,
and burnt it ,until all that was left was ash.
　
大切な臼を焼かれたおじいさんは、せめて灰だけでもと、
臼を焼いた灰をザルに入れて持ち帰ろうとしました。
　The old man who's mortar had been burnt to ash,
took the ash home with him in a basket.
　
その時、灰が風に飛ばされて、枯れ木にフワリとかかりました。
　But a strong wind blew up and sent the ash
flying and presently it landed on a dead tree.

すると、どうでしょう。
　Then, what do you think happened ?
　
灰のかかった枯れ木に、満開の花が咲いたのです。
　The dead tree suddenly burst out
in full bloom and came back to life.

おじいさんは、うれしくなって。
　The old man became very cheerful once more.
　
「枯れ木に花を咲かせましょう。パアーッ」
" I will make the whole tree bloom again,
there you go. "
　
と、言いながら次々に灰をまいて、枯れ木に美しい花を咲かせました。
　The old man then continued to throw ash
all over the tree and flowers bloomed
in every place.
　
ちょうどそこへ、お城のお殿さまが通りかかりました。
　At precisely that time,
the lord of a local castle was riding by.
「ほう、これは見事じゃ」
" Wow, this is a remarkable thing- "
　
お殿さまはたいそう喜んで、おじいさんにたくさんのほうびをあげました。
　The lord was so pleased with what he saw,
that he presently showered the old man
with gifts of all sorts.
　
それを見ていた欲張りじいさんが、
　But, the greedy old man had been watching again.
　
おい、わしも花を咲かせてほうびをもらう。その灰を、わしによこせ！」
　無理矢理に灰を取り上げると、お殿さまに言いました。
" Hey, I will also make the flowers bloom
and receive presents for sure.
Hand over that ash to me ! "
　
　
「殿さま、この灰はわしの物です。
" Lord, this is my ash.

　わしが枯れ木に花を咲かせますから、わしにもほうびを下さい。」
　I will make this dead tree bloom once more,
so please reward me for it . ”
　
バァーッ！
Fly ash!　
　
欲張りじいさんは殿さまの前でたくさん花を咲かせようと、灰をいっせいにまきました。
　The greedy old man tried to make the flowers bloom,
threw all the ash up in the air at one
go and straight into the face of the lord.
すると灰がお殿さまの目に入って、欲張りじいさんはお殿さまの家来に
さんざん殴られたということです。
　The ash went straight into the lord’s eyes ,
so his soldiers beat that greedy old man soundly.
