ねずみのよめいり Mouse's marriage (にほんのむかしばなし) (Japanese classical stories)

むかしむかし、ネズミ の いっか が いました。 　とうさんネズミ と、かあさんネズミ と、ひとりむすめ の チューコ です。 Once upon a time, there lived a young mouse, Chuuko, and her mother and father.

「ねえ、おとうさん。そろそろ チューコ にも、おむこさん を みつけなくては なりませんね」 　One day, Chuuko's mother said to her father, ”Dear, isn't it about time that we find a nice husband for Chuuko ?”

「そうだな。チューコ は せかいいち の むすめ だから、せかいいち の おむこさん を みつけて やらないとな。ところ で せかいいち つよい の は、やっぱり おひさま だろうな」 ”So it is... But seeing as she's the best daughter in the world, she deserves only the best husband in the world. I suppose the strongest husband in the world would be the Sun...”

とうさんネズミ と かあさんネズミ は、おひさま の ところ へ いって たのんでみました。 　With that, Chuuko's mother and father went to the Sun and asked him,

「せかいいち つよい おひさま。チューコ を およめ に もらって くれませんか？」 ”Oh, Sun, you who are the strongest in the whole world, will you accept our Chuuko as your bride ?”

「そりゃ うれしいが、くも は わし より つよい ぞ。わし を かくして しまうからな」 ”I'm honored you asked me, but the Cloud is stronger than I. After all, he can cover me up easily..”

そこで とうさんネズミ と かあさんネズミ は、くも の ところ へ いって みました。 　And so Chuuko's mother and father made their way to the Cloud and asked,

「せかいいち つよい くも さん。チューコ を およめ に もらって くれませんか？」 ”Oh Cloud, you who are the strongest in the whole world, will you accept our Chuuko as your bride ?”

「そりゃ うれしいが、かぜ は わし より つよいぞ。 わし を かんたん に ふきとばして しまうからな」 The Cloud replied, ”I'm honored you asked me, but the Wind is stronger than I. After all, blowing me away is nothing to him...”

そこで とうさんネズミ と かあさんネズミ は、かぜ の ところ へ いって みました。 And so Chuuko's mother and father made their way to the Wind and asked,

「せかいいち つよい かぜさん、チューコ を およめ に もらって くれませんか？」 ”Oh Wind, you who are the strongest in the world, will you accept our Chuuko as your bride ?”

「そりゃ うれしいが、かぺ は わし より つよいぞ。 わし が いくら ふいても、わし を はねかえして しまうんじゃ」 The Wind replied, ”I'm honored you asked me, but the Wall is stronger than I. After all, no matter how hard I huff and puff, my breath merely glances off of him...”

そこで とうさんネズミ と かあさんネズミ は、かべ の ところ へ いって みました。 And so Chuuko's mother and father made their way to the Wall and asked,

「せかいいち つよい かべさん。チューコ を およめ に もらって くれませんか？」 ”Oh Wall, you who are the strongest in the world, will you accept our Chuuko as your bride ?”

「そりゃ うれしいが、わし より も つよい もの が いるぞ。それは ネズミ じゃ。 ネズミ に かじられたら、わし も おしまい だからな」 　The Wall replied, ”I'm honored you asked me, but there is another, stronger even than I. That would be you mice. After all, even I can be brought down by your constant gnawing at me.”

「なんと！　せかい で いちばん つよい のは、わしら ネズミ だったのか」 ”Do you mean to say... we mice are the strongest in the world ?” asked Chuuko's father.

そこで チューコ は、めでたく ネズミ の およめさん に なりました。 Upon hearing that, they chose a mouse to be Chuuko's husband, and they lived happily ever after.
