ツル の おんがえし The Crane of Gratitude (日本昔話) (Japanese classical stories)

むかしむかし、まずしい けれど、こころ の やさしい おじいさん と おばあさん が いました。 Once upon a time, there lived an exceedingly poor but very kind old man and his wife.

ある さむい ふゆ の ひ、おじいさん は まち へ たきぎ を うり に でかけました。 One very cold winters day, the old man decided to go off to town to sell some firewood.

すると とちゅう の たんぼ の なか で、いちわ の ツル が ワナ に かかって もがいて いたのです。 But there in the middle of a field the old man saw a crane struggling in a trap that had been laid.

「おお、おお、かわいそうに」 "Oh no, what a poor thing"

おじいさん は かわいそう に おもって、ツル を にがして やりました。 So the old man went over and freed the poor bird.

すると ツル は、おじいさん の あたま の うえ を さんベん まわって、 The crane then rose up above the old man’s head, circled around three times and cried out,

「カウ、カウ、カウ」 "Caw, caw ,caw"

と、さも うれしそうに ないて、とんでいきました。 Then after crying out happily, it flew off.

その よる、ひぐれごろ から ふりはじめた ゆき が、 コンコン と つもって おおゆき に なりました。 That evening as twilight came, snow began to fall and piled up heavily.

おじいさん が おばあさん に ツル を たすけた はなし を している と、おもて の と を、 The old man was in the middle of telling his wife the subject of the crane, when from behind the door…

トントン、トントン Knock, knock

と、たたく おと が します。 There came a sound.

「ごめんください。あけて くださいまし」 “Hello, is anybody there? Open up please."

わかい おんな の ひと の こえ です。 Came the voice of a young lady.

おばあさん が と を あける と、あたま から ゆき を かぶった むすめ が たって いました。 When the old man’s wife opened the door, there was a young girl standing, covered from head to toe in snow.

おばあさん は おどろいて、 The old lady was very surprised,

「まあ、まあ、さむかった でしょう。さあ、はや くおはいり」 "Well well, you must be cold. Come on in, quickly.

と、むすめ を いえ に いれて やりました。 And so, the young girl was let into the house.

「わたし は、この あたり に ひと を たずねて きました が、 "I called all around.

どこを さがしても みあたらず、ゆき は ふるし、ひ は くれるし、 やっと の こと で ここまで まいりました。 No matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t find a place to stay while the snow was falling and darkness came over me, but somehow I found this place.

ごめいわく でしょう が、どうか ひとばん とめて ください まし」 I know it is probably too much too ask , but would it be possible for me to stay here one night?"

むすめ は ていねい に、て を ついて たのみました。 The girl held her hands together and politely begged for her request.

「それは それは、さぞ、おこまり じゃろう。 "Why, of course. How distressed you must be.

こんな ところで よかったら、どうぞ、おとまりなさい」 If such a place as this is agreeable to you, then by all means, please stay."

「ありがとうございます」 "Thank you so much"

むすめ は よろこん で、その ばん は しょくじ の てつだい など を して はたらいて やすみました。 The young girl was very glad at hearing this. That night she helped out with the cooking and housework, and then took a rest.

あくる あさ、おばあさん が め を さます と、むすめ は もう おきて はたらいて いました。 The very next morning, the old lady was surprised to see that the girl had awoken and started the house chores.

いろり には ひ が もえ、なべ から は ゆげ が あがっています。 Fire burned from the hearth and steam was rising up from their stewpot.

そればかりか、いえじゅう が きれい に そうじ されて いるのです。 What is more, the house had been cleaned from top to bottom.

「まあ、まあ、ごはん ばかりか、おそうじ まで してくれたのかね。ありがとう」 "Apart from making the rice you have also cleaned the house as well. Thank you"

つぎ の ひ も、その つぎ の ひ も おおゆき で、と を あける こと も できません。 The next day and the next, thick snow fell and fell and the front door could not be opened.

むすめ は、おじいさん の かた を もんで くれました。 The girl then started to massage the old man’s shoulders.

「おお、おお、なんて よく はたらく むすめさん じゃ。 "Ahh, what a hard working girl you are.

なんて よく き の つく やさしい むすめさん じゃ。 And how thoughtful and kind you are too.

こんな むすめ が いえ に いてくれたら、どんなに うれしいじゃろう」 How happy I am when someone like you is around."

おじいさん と おばあさん は、かお を みあわせました。 The old man and his wife both looked at each other in agreement.

すると むすめ が、て を ついて たのみました。 The young girl then held her hands together again and begged their kindness.

「みより の ない むすめ です。 "I am a girl with no relatives.

どうぞ、この いえ に おいて くださいませ」 Please, could you allow me to stay in this house."

「おお、おお」 "Pardon " 「まあ、まあ」 "Well, well I...."

おじいさん と おばあさん は よろこんで、それから さんにん まずしい けれど たのしい まいにち を すごしました。 So the old man and his wife happily agreed. The three of them, poor but merrily lived together from that day on.

さて、あるひ の こと。 Now, one day.

むすめ が はた を おりたい から、いと を かって ください と たのみました。 The girl expressed her desire to make a line of cloth on their loom, so she asked for some thread to be bought.

おじいさん が いと を かって くると、むすめ は はた の まわり に びょうぶ を たてて、 After the old man had bought the thread, the young girl set up a folding screen around the loom.

「はた を おりあげる まで、けっして のぞかないで ください」 "Until I have finished weaving this cloth, please, do not EVER look behind this screen ."

と、いって、はた を おりはじめました。 After saying so, she started her weaving.

キコバタトン、キコバタトン。 Up and down, went the noise of the loom.

むすめ が はた を おって、みっか が たちました。 After three days of weaving had passed.

ようやく はた を おりおえた むすめ は、 The cloth was finally finished.

「おじいさま、おばあさま、この あやにしき を まち へ うりに いって、 かえりには また、いと を かってきて ください」 "Please go down to town to sell this silk cloth I have woven and on the way back, please buy some more thread."

と、むすめ は そら の くも の ように かるい、うつくしい おりもの を ふたり に みせました。 The girl then showed off her woven cloth, which was as beautiful and as light as the clouds in the sky.

「これは、すばらしい」 "This is truly wonderful."

おじいさん が まち へ うり に いくと、それ を とのさま が たかい ねだん で かってくれました。 The old man set off for the town as was able to sell the cloth for a very high price to the lord of the domain.

おじいさん は よろこんで、いと を かって かえりました。 The old man was overjoyed and quickly bought some more thread and returned home.

すると むすめ は また、はた を おりはじめました。 Once more, the girl picked up the thread and started weaving.

「ねえ、おじいさん。あの むすめ は いったい どうして、 あんな みごとな ぬの を おるの でしょうね。 "Hey, husband. How can that girl produce such fine cloth do you think ?

・・・ほんの すこし、のぞいてみましょう」 ... Let me just have a peek at her ?"

おばあさん が びょうぶ の すきま から のぞいて みると、そこに むすめ は いなくて、 When the old lady looked through the gap in the screen, there was no girl to be seen anywhere.

やせこけた いっぴき の ツル が ながい くちばし で じぶん の うもう を ひきぬいては、いと に はさんで はた を おっていたのです。 A part from a skinny white crane. What’s more, the crane with it's long white beak was pulling out it's feathers and folding them into the cloth it was weaving.

「おじいさん、おじいさんや」 "Husband, husband, quick"

おどろいた おばあさん は、おじいさん に このこと を はなしました。 The astonished old lady then told her husband all about what she had seen.

キコバタトン、キコバタトン・・・。 Up and down, up and down ...went the loom

はた の おと が やんで、まえ よりも やせほそった むすめ が ぬの を かかえて でてきました。 Soon, the noise of the loom stopped and out from behind the screen came a thinner than before girl, holding a piece of cloth.

「おじいさま、おばあさま。もう、かくしていても しかたありませんね。 "Old man, old lady. I can’t hide myself any longer can I.

わたしは、いつか たすけられた ツル で ございます。 For I am the crane that was saved by you in the field.

ごおん を おかえししたい と おもって むすめ に なって まいりました。 I wanted to repay my kindness to you. So I became this girl.

けれど、もう おわかれ で ございます。 But, now I must leave.

どうぞ、いつまでも おたっしゃ で いて くださいませ」 Please live long and prosperously."

そう いったかと おもうと、おじいさん と おばあさん が とめる のも きかず、 たちまち いちわ の ツル に なって そら へ まいあがりました。 After saying this, the young girl , without listening to the old man and his wife’s pleas for her to stay, turned back into a crane and flew high up into the sky.

そして いえ の うえ を、さんベん まわって、 Then ,three times she flew around above the house,

「カウ、カウ、カウ」 "Caw, caw, caw"

と、なきながら、やま の むこう へ とんで いって しまいました。 And then flew off over the mountains and far away.

「ツルや。いや、むすめや。 "It was a crane. No, no a girl.

どうか おまえ も、たっしゃ で いておくれ。 Please live happily ever after yourself.

・・・いままで、ありがとう」 ... Thank you for everything."

おじいさん と おばあさん は、いつまでも いつまでも ツル を みおくりました。 The old man and his wife looked on in the direction of where the crane had flown off.

それから のち、ふたり は むすめ の おった ぬの を うった おかね で しあわせ に くらしました。 And so, with the money they had made from selling the girl’s cloth they lived happily ever after.
