かさじぞう Kasa jizou（The Children's guardian Deity） (にほんのむかしばなし) (Japanese classical stories)
むかしむかし、ある ところ に、びんぼう だけど こころやさしい、おじいさん と おばあさん が いました。 Once upon a time, there lived an old couple who were very poor but very kind hearted.
あるとし の おおみそか の こと です。 It all happened one New Year's eve .
おじいさん と おばあさん は、ふたり で かさ を つくり ました。 The old man and his wife had spent some time to make some hats made from bamboo rushes.
それ を まち へ もっていって うり、おしょうがつ の おもち を かう つもり です。 They both planned to go to the nearest village and sell them to buy some rice cakes for the New Year.
「かさ は いつつ も あるから、もち ぐらい かえる だろう」 "We have made five hats, so I'm sure we will have enough to sell and be able to buy some rice cakes ."
「おねがい しますね。それから こんや は ゆき に なります から、き を つけて くださいよ」 "Please be careful, it will start to snow soon. " Said the old lady to her husband.
おじいさん は、いつつ の かさ を もって でかけ ました。 The old man then, picked up the five bamboo hats and went out.
いえ を でて まもなく、ゆき が ふって きました。 Soon after leaving his house it started to snow .
ゆき は だんだん はげしく なった ので、おじいさん は せっせ と みち を いそぎ ました。 Since the snow had become gradually heavier and heavier, the old man quickened his pace .
むらはずれ まで くる と、おじぞうさま が むっつ ならん で たって います。 When the man reached the outskirts of the village he found six Jizou (Guardian deity statues) standing in a line.
おじぞうさま の あたま にも かた にも、ゆき が つもって います。 The snow was by now slowly pilling up on the statues heads and shoulders.
これ を みた おじいさん は、そのまま とおりすぎる こと が できません でした。 The old man saw this and thought he could not go on any further.
「おじぞうさま。ゆき が ふって さむかろうな。せめて、この かさ を かぶって くだされ」 "Guardian-deity-of-children . It is snowing and bitterly cold, at least wear these bamboo hats to protect yourselves from the snow."
おじいさん は おじぞうさま に、うる つもり の かさ を かぶせて やりました。 The old man then proceeded to cover the heads of the statues with the hats he planned to sell.
でも、おじぞうさま は むっつ なのに、かさ は いつつ しか ありません。 But, there were six statues and the old man only had five hats.
そこで おじいさん は じぶん の かさ を ぬいで、さいご の おじぞうさま に かぶせて やりました。 So, the old man decided to take off his own hat and covered the sixth statue with it .
いえ へ かえる と、おばあさん が びっくり して いいました。 When he got home his wife was astonished to see him.
「まあまあ、ずいぶん はやかった ですねぇ。それに、おじいさん の かさ は どうしました？」 "Well well, you were very quick , and how about the hats ? " Asked his wife.
おじいさん は、おじぞうさま の こと を はなして やりました。 So, the old man told his wife about what he had done for the Guardian deities.
「まあまあ、それ は よい こと を しましたねえ。おもち なんて、なくても いいですよ」 "Well, that is a good thing you did , we will do just as well without the rice cakes."
おばあさん は、ニコニコ して いいました。 Replied the old lady with a smile upon her face .
その よる、よなか だと いうのに、ふしぎ な うた が きこえて きました。 That night, a mysterious tune was heard from outside.
♪～じいさん の いえ は どこだ。 ♪ ～Where, o where is the old man's house.
♪～かさ の おれい を、とどけ に きたぞ。 ♪～I have come with a token of my thanks for him .
♪～じいさん の いえ は どこだ。 ♪～Where, o where is the old man's house.
♪～かさ の おれい を、とどけ に きたぞ。 ♪～I have come with a token of my thanks for him .
うたごえ は どんどん ちかづいて、とうとう おじいさん の いえ の まえ まで くると、 The tune got closer and closer , until it reached the old couple's front door.
ズシーン！  Thump!
と、なにか を おく おと が して、そのまま きえて しまいました。 Went the sound of something being placed outside the house.
おじいさん が そっと と を あけて みると、おじいさん の あげた かさ を かぶった おじぞうさま の うしろすがた が みえました。 When the old man opened the door, the back of the deity's statue, that the old man had place his hat on, could be seen walking away into the distance.
そして いえ の まえ には、おしょうがつ よう の おもち や ごちそう が やま の よう に おいて ありました。 And there, in front of the house, was a mountain of rice cakes and treats for the New Year.

お地蔵さま
	今でもよく目にするお地蔵さまは、釈迦が死んだあと、 みろく仏の出生するまでの間、無仏の世界に住んで人々を 救済する神さまの像で、中国では唐代、日本では平安時代より 盛んに尊信されています。 　「かさじぞう」のように、昔話に出てくるお地蔵さまの多くは、 親切にしてくれた人に恩返しをしてくれます。
