Subtitles for "Le Prophete" was revised. (June 19, 2021)

I have found some DVD player and some software can not display the subtitles.
If you find such a situation, please try other tools.
( Or you can try to use "**.sub" files. )

I have attached Japanese (and English / Italian) subtitle, for my own sake, to some rare opera videos;
- Meyerbeer "Le Prophete" (NEW !!! June 19, 2021)
- Meyerbeer "Robert le diable"
- Rossini "Mose in Egitto"
- Verdi "Un Giorno di Regno" (revised at Mar 26 2011)
- Einem "Dantons Tod" (revised at Dec. 19 2010)
These operas are not available as commercial DVDs until now October 2010.
Anyone can download split video data from following links, join them with hjsprit, and burn to NTSC DVD.

tools for making subtitles:
Main software to attach subtitle is "
Subtitle Workshop".
To convert avi files to DVD format, I use :
"
avidemux", "DVDSupEncode", "Muxman", and "IfoEdit".
Applications above are for Windows.
I think there are so many alternative tools.

Meyerbeer "Le Prophete" (Wien 1998)
with French / English / Japanese subtitles

A new version with subtitles for Berthe's suicide scene! (uploaded June 2021)

In my opinion, in spite of the ugliest stage, wonderful singings of Baltsa, Domingo, and other singers have made it clear that this is one of the greatest opera in the 19th century.
I recommend you to check the libretto of the last scene, which is almost impossible to understand with this video.
French libretto of Act 5 is available at:
http://www.kareol.es/obras/elprofeta/acto3.htm
Google auto translation can produce readable English text.

I checked the timing French caption with vocal score.
Diacritical marks had to be removed from French caption data.
I once asked via youtube about the lyrics which seem not to correspond to the libretto, but words of Berthe's suicide scene were only partially found. So this caption lacks some words.
If possible, please tell me the entire words of Berthe's suicide scene.

English subtitle was prepared referring English translation by Richard Arsenty.
Japanese subtitle was translated from English subtitle.

To check the quality of picture/sound, youtube files, which were uploaded to ask the lyrics, are available:

Meyerbeer "Robert le diable" (Paris 1985)
with English / Japanese subtitles

Source:
Antenne2 Broadcast.
Picture is dark but good.

To make subtitles, I used;
(A) French libretto:
http://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Robert_le_Diable_(op%C3%A9ra)
(B)Vocal Score with with Italian words and a new English adaptation by John Oxenford:
https://urresearch.rochester.edu/institutionalPublicationPublicView.action;jsess\
ionid=FB514B062FAAFD0CA41F07D0239E8027?institutionalItemId=7442

All scenes in the video can be found in (B).
(A) lacks some scenes, for example, conversation between Isabella and Alice in the Act 4.

Japanese subtitle is mainly based on the result of French-English auto translation of (A).
English subtitle is mainly based on (B). I refered also (A) to simplify the text.
These subtitles are for those who don't understand French, and are not unfamiliar with this opera - as I was.
Of cource you can switch off the subtitle of my broken English.

I made Japanese subtitle from English translation attached in Philips CD 420 109-2.

Italian caption:
Libretto I got from web differs from that in Philips CD at many points.
I corrected only when I convinced that the CD text coincide with the sung text.
Diacritical marks had to be removed.

English subtitle:
Except adding hyphens and commas, and changing order of a few sentences, I made no intentional change to English translation by LIONEL SALTER attached in Philips CD, though typing errors may remain.
I do not know even how to obtain permission, but I hope the translater will admit my attempt.

with English / Italian / Japanese subtitles

by Martin Sokol attached in Philips CD 422 429-2.
